Originally built for the United States' Aeronef fleet the R.A.S. Ensenada and Hacienda Tijuana were purchased from the US Government as part of the Republic's attempts to build up Aeronef forces quickly after the Second Mexican War. The US was willing to part with two of its Eagle class rocket sloops, especially after the spectacular explosion that destroyed the U.S.S. Eagle over the Presidio in San Francisco in 1890. The Sloops were refitted with new 800kf R-matter uptake furnaces (in keeping with the engineering standards of the time) and the Ensenada had the dangerous rocket clusters replaced with conventional bombs, while the Tijuana retained the rockets. Ironically enough it was a saboteur's bomb that blew up the Ensenada in 1902 while the Hacienda Tijuana survives to this day in the Aerospace museum of the Republic of Sonora, La Paz.
